Electronic computer centre (ERC) of the Faculty of Economics was organized by the end of 1980 on initiative of a larger number of teachers and assistants of the Department of Statistics and Mathematics. In that period a mini-computer Honeywell-6/43 was bought, with 256 Kb of central memory, 4 terminals two units disks, a serial printer and a disk unit 13+13 MR. Several generations of students of the mentioned major course used that computer to learn MR. Several generations of students of the mentioned course have learnt the use of FORTRAN and COBOL on that computer.
ERC was planned to be a working unit and the suggestion about its organization was accepted. The computer was primarily intended for the needs of teaching activities and scientific-research work of teachers, associates and students. On that account, extraordinary results were achieved (in one period working conditions of students at the Faculty of Economics were the best at the whole University), and the centre enabled many younger associates and students to write many doctor's and master's theses. Good association was accomplished with the Republican Institute for Statistics and with other organizations and institutions in order to develop and use software. All needs of development of the centre couldn't be fulfilled completely according to the plan from the start, concerning enough staff, maintenance and supplying of equipment, mostly because of insufficient financial means.
In 1990 a larger quantity of computers PC AT 286 was acquired, which greatly modernized computer centre's work and improved its work and performing of teaching activities and put them on a higher level. Apart from teaching activities within undergraduate and postgraduate studies and scientific-research work of the teaching staff, courses were organized for various programs which were attended by the students of the Faculty of Economics. In December 1995 the Faculty decided to renovate the premises of the Computer centre and supply new equipment. After renovating, the premises acquired the looks of a modern centre whose equipment and furniture are adapted to a specific purpose, as well as organization of premises. There is a centre for surveillance of work in both halls at the same time, constant surveillance of entering and exit in the premises of ERC. The acquired equipment had the best characteristics at the time: PC AT 486, 8Mb of working memory, colour monitors and mice. Apart from that, supplying of equipment for projection on the screen improved the quality of performing of teaching activities. It must be mentioned that in this period every office of lecturers was equipped with a computer with the same characteristics. By this, the computer centre became the core of informational system of the Faculty of Economics. In the middle of 1996 the plan was designed and works were performed on building of the net of the Faculty and connecting with the Computer centre of Belgrade University (RCUB). This way all the computers at the Faculty have an option of using the Internet.
In summer 2001 the third hall (hall C) was built which enlarged the capacity of the Computer centre, and currently the fourth hall is being built (hall D) which should have the capacity of 45 computers.
Working hours of the Computer centre are extended and now they are from 8 am till 10 pm . During the whole day, lecturers and students are allowed to have access to computers for attending of teaching activities or for individual work. Apart from that, the courses are planned soon on various levels which will contribute to spreading of knowledge and interest in informatics and computer technology.
In its future work, ERC will remain the basis for undergraduate and postgraduate studies and the central part of the complete informational system which comprises the nets in NICEF, Centre for publishing activities, bookkeeping, Department for student issues, library, postgraduate studies, bookshop and all studies and offices at the Faculty.
